Stay or Leave? The book.

That question keeps coming back. On the train home, stuck in traffic, in the shower. When all you want is to sleep, and you can't stop thinking about it.

  • Do I quit, or wait for something to change?
  • Do I move abroad, or stay close to my family?
  • Do I end this relationship, or try again?

This book helps you out of the paralysis, with a choice that carries your signature.

Cover of "Stay or Leave?" by Donato De Tullio: tools and exercises for difficult decisions

Indecision has a price. You pay it in time.

How many sleepless nights have you already spent looking for the right decision? Here is the truth: the right decision does not exist. And nobody teaches you what to do when a single choice could turn a whole life upside down.

So, afraid of getting it wrong, you decide not to decide. And you pay for that indecision with the most expensive currency there is: the time that keeps passing while you stand still.

You have made the list of pros and cons a dozen times, asked everyone for advice, changed your mind every single evening. You are left with one certainty: the question is still there.

There is no choice that is right for everyone. There is the choice most coherent with who you are, and with who you want to become.

Fifteen chapters. Fifteen tools.

I have been there. In 2014 I left Puglia in a Kia Picanto loaded to the roof with doubts. I pushed trolleys at Decathlon holding a PhD in materials chemistry, nearly ended up in China teaching English, went through one burnout and dodged a second by a hair. Before learning to decide better, I decided badly more times than I can count. The method that came out of it is in this book: not to tell you what to do with your life, but to give you the tools to figure it out yourself.

“Decide” comes from the Latin for cutting away. Every cut leaves a scar. I built the method in this book out of my scars, so you can choose which scars to wear.

Fifteen chapters, fifteen tools, a different one in each. You will not just read and underline: we will work together, and you can start with the first exercise tonight.

  • The 72-Hour Test, to learn to tell the noise from the signal.
  • The Two-Way Door, because not every road is one way. You will find out whether the one you are about to take has an exit.
  • The Hidden Path, because at a crossroads A and B are almost never the only options. You can build a road C, entirely yours, and you will learn how.
  • The Pre-Mortem: we will run an autopsy on your worst future failures, so you can avoid them.
  • The Coin That Doesn't Decide: a simple trick to discover what you really want.

Inside you also find true stories and science translated into normal words. No magic formulas and no sunsets.

Because there is no right choice. There is your choice.

Five Ds. One criterion: yours.

Five questions in a row, and one concrete tool for every step. Doubt stops being the thing that blocks you and becomes the thing that guides you.

D

Data

Separate facts from interpretations. We often take for a fact what is only our reading of an event. The first step is telling them apart.

D

Direction

Understand what really matters to you. There is no answer that fits everyone: we start from the values your past decisions have protected, and from who you want to become.

D

Decision

Stop going in circles. With the facts gathered and the direction clear, you choose. Without the certainty that everything will go as you hope, but with awareness and a signature.

D

Destination

Turn the decision into actions. A decision without a plan stays an intention: a precise point to reach, concrete steps and deadlines.

D

Desire

Listen to what you want. Without the fire of a real desire, decisions made on logic alone go out at the first winter. Sometimes a coin is all it takes to find out.

Three doubts before you buy.

The short reviews below come from verified buyers of the Italian edition on Amazon, August and September 2026, translated from Italian.

«Another motivational book? No, thanks.»

Fridge quotes are everywhere. Here you get a practical path that puts you to work: grab pen and paper, or open your Crossroads Workbook.

A concrete method for facing your own doubts. It doesn’t feel like the usual motivational book full of ready-made answers. You can feel how much work went into it: a real system for facing your doubts, tested first of all on himself. It doesn’t hand you an answer, it helps you find yours.

Nobody can choose in your place.

«I don't have time to read a whole book.»

You don't have to finish it in one evening, or read it front to back. Each chapter tackles one piece of the decision and offers one tool to try: start from the one you need today, and come back for the others at your next crossroads.

If you feel stuck at a crossroads. I tried the 72-hour test on a decision I had been putting off for weeks, and I finally understood whether it was a real signal or just tiredness. The pre-mortem is just as useful. Recommended to anyone who spends their nights turning the same question over in their head.

You don't have to fix your whole life in one evening.

«I'm not sure it's for me.»

The book is about the crossroads of life and work, and it does not tell you to always change: sometimes staying is the choice most coherent with what you want. On Amazon you can read the first pages for free before you buy.

Useful and concrete. Simple, direct, effective. It helped me reread past choices and understand where they came from, make peace with what has been, and think more clearly about the decisions ahead.

Read the first pages and judge for yourself.

Illuminating. I was already following Donato on social media, and in this book I found many ideas to help me get through the hard moments and make decisions when no choice seems the right one.

«I am a Ferrari.»

It’s not a boast, or at least not only that. It’s one of the lines that stayed with me after reading Stay or Leave? by Donato De Tullio, and maybe that’s exactly how certain lines work: they don’t tell us something we didn’t know, they come knocking on the door of something we already knew and kept in a room with the lights off.

By now my copy has a cover dusted with sand. Real sand, from the sea, that got into the pages together with the salt on my fingers, the sun, the towels thrown down next to it, the hours when time finally seems to stop asking anything of us. I didn’t just read this book: I carried it with me, I lived it at the seaside, I opened and closed it while summer went by around me. And I won’t clean that cover. Books that are too intact have something suspicious about them. I prefer the ones that, once read, can prove where they’ve been.

Stay or Leave? talks about decisions without presuming to decide for us. And that’s no small thing, in a time full of people who seem to know other people’s road perfectly. Donato builds instead a method for crossing the fog, for telling what we desire from what we put up with out of habit, prudence from fear, loyalty to ourselves from plain inertia. Because staying is not necessarily courage, and leaving is not necessarily freedom. Sometimes the exact opposite is true.

The five Ds, naturally, gave me a fairly serious side effect: while reading, I started imagining a platform. A place to collect ideas, notes, intuitions still on shaky legs, and run them through the method, question them, connect them, come back to them after a week or six months and discover that in the meantime we are the ones who changed. Not yet another digital dump where notes get buried never to be read again, but a kind of workshop of possibilities. When a book makes you want to build something that didn’t exist before, to me it has already performed a small act of civic magic.

I’ve crossed quite a few crossroads in my life. Some I chose, others found me. At others still I looked at the two roads on offer and, liking neither, started digging. Maybe that’s the point of the book that stayed closest to me: not simply knowing whether to stay or leave, but asking who the man is who, right at that moment, is asking the question. Because sometimes we change road. Other times it’s the road that, slowly, has changed us.

My copy is still missing one thing: Donato’s dedication. Sooner or later I’ll get it. And I hope that, on that day, a few grains of this sand will still be there between his pen and the paper. That would be right. A book should be able to remember the sea. And a Ferrari should know why it starts its engine.

Who is behind the book.

More than ten years have passed since I pushed a Decathlon trolley holding a PhD in chemistry. Today at Essity I lead logistics for eight sites across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, and as a business & communication coach I work with people and organisations in the moments when a decision really counts. And no, I have not quit Essity: proof that changing is not always the choice most coherent with who you want to become.

The full story, year by year

You will never find the right road. But you can build your own.

Fear is always there at the crossroads. By the end of the book you will know how to build your own road, at every future crossroads. And if your crossroads is about work and you'd rather talk it through, bring it to a coffee.
